Description LinuxLive will showcase various Linux alternatives to Windows. Attendees will get to see the systems themselves, and many of the commonly used applications for everyday tasks. Switching to a new operating system can seem like a daunting task, as can switching to alternative applications. Members of the Bristol and Bath Linux User Group aim to show attendees just how easy it can be, and just how much more they can get out of using Linux on their PCs.
Goals of the event (from a Mozilla perspective):
- Forge a relationship between the Mozilla UK community and a like-minded FLOSS community: the Bristol and Bath Linux User Group (BLUG)
- Recruit like-minded members of BLUG to the community-linux mailing list [1] and any willing system admins to Community IT
- Educate and inform attendees to the event of, depending on their existing level of technological know-how:
- What a web browser is, and promote Firefox for Desktop in doing that (one of Mozilla's goal's this year), which is particularly relevant for users who opt to stick with XP rather than switch to a Linux distro (we can't have them stuck on IE8 forever)
- That the web is theirs to modify, and point them towards Webmaker makes and activities
- That Mozilla is an open-source not-for-profit organisation which depends on contributions from volunteers, and how they could contribute
