What are digital skills?

Digital Skills are the mental tools we all use to search, produce, play, and learn with technology. For smartphones, these skills encompass the use of apps, WiFi, mobile operating systems, emojis, online services, social media, and more.

Who is these prototypes for?

The Digital Skills Observatory research project follows 150 first-time smartphone users to measure the impact of digital skills trainings on the way they use their smartphones and Digital Financial Services. Most study participants have less than 6 months of experience with a smartphone, are between 18 and 30 years old, have varied education and occupation, and come from the Kisumu, Mombasa, and Nairobi regions.

Android?

The participants in the Digital Skills Observatory all have Android phones. Therefore, it’s most useful to develop Android apps where appropriate, but teams should not feel limited: explore other platforms that Android smartphones and their apps provide, e.g. Telegram, WhatsApp.
